Dr Nisha is a highly trained, exceptional Ophthalmologist, having received recognition for her Ophthalmic talent during her undergraduate medical degree by receiving the prestigious AR Moodie Prize in Ophthalmology. She completed research in conjunction with her undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee, resulting in three scientific publications. Following this, Dr Nisha completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in cataract and intraocular lens implants which has been utilised in current cataract surgery techniques. Her thesis, titled “Assessing and correlating aspects of cataract using Scheimpflug photography and wavefront aberrometry” has received international recognition, resulting in advancing current surgical techniques for cataract surgery. She presented her unique research in International Conferences, providing advice to many research laboratories in the USA. In addition, she has published her work in many peer-reviewed publications. Dr Nisha was also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, where she was teaching undergraduate medical, nursing and Optometry students.
Dr Nisha completed her surgical training in Ophthalmology in hospitals throughout New Zealand. She then completed further subspecialty training in Paediatric Ophthalmology in the prestigious Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne (largest Children’s Hospital in the Southern Hemisphere). During this time, she was involved in many research projects, including strabismus surgery, retinoblastoma and paediatric cataract. In addition, Dr Sachdev was involved in teaching registrars (trainee doctors) Paediatric Ophthalmology. Following her fellowship, Dr Nisha was offered a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) position at the Royal Children’s Hospital where she was pioneer in restructuring the Paediatric Training programme for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO). In addition, she was organising the Paediatric training course; which is the only course for RANZCO. Dr Nisha was involved in teaching registrars surgical techniques of Paediatric Ophthalmic Surgery, including strabismus surgery, nasolacrimal duct surgery, paediatric cataract surgery, retinal laser and paediatric eyelid surgery.
Dr Nisha relocated back to Sydney 3 years ago, where she founded City West Eye Specialists. Her practice is well equipped with the latest technology for both adult and paediatric ophthalmology. We have specific technology for the diagnosis and treatment of cataract, glaucoma, retinal diseases, pterygia, eyelid disorders and paediatric ophthalmology and have the resources to perform laser procedures and intravitreal injections.
Dr Nisha is currently affiliated with many ophthalmologic societies. She is a board member of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and is currently organising Business Skills Seminars for Ophthalmologists. She is currently chair of the Younger Fellows Group of the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, where she organises sessions for young Ophthalmologists throughout the year. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Australasian Paediatric Opthalmology Special Interest Group and the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Dr Nisha is actively involved in international aid groups, specifically Vietnam Vision Project (see people profile). She is a surgeon with this organisation that performs cataract surgery for the disadvantaged and poor people of rural Vietnam. In addition, she is involved with the organisation Sight For All.
Dr Nisha has keen interests outwith Ophthalmology. She has always had a passion for music – indeed, her career choice was between medicine and music. She is also keen in photography, sport and travel.
